Kids draw their own 'Erewash' to commemorate council's fiftieth anniversary

To celebrate Erewash Borough Council's fiftieth anniversary, the Erewash Museum has been hosting an exhibition of postcards which show people's favourite places in the borough.

The event began on the 18th of July and will be running till the 31st of August. It's taken up a whole room at the museum based in Ilkeston, with all four walls covered in children's drawn postcards.

The borough council was formed on 1 April 1974 under the Local Government Act 1972 - replacing the former Ilkeston Municipal Borough, Long Eaton Urban District, and the South East Derbyshire Rural District - and got its name from the river Erewash.

On the Erewash Sound Breakfast Show, one of our reporters came into the studio to speak with presenter Paul Stacey about what was on, as well as hear interviews with kids and staff alike.

The museum's Volunteer & Cultural Development Officer, Joanne Brown, said that it is teaching children about the heritage "that is on their doorstep". Erewash is home to many popular attractions like the Bennerley Viaduct.

She continued: "Sometimes it's just about having an appreciation of the area that you live in. It's really important because then you'll want to look after it as you get bigger as well, especially for the young people."

"It's also nice for the older generation to have somewhere where they can say what their favourite thing is about where they live, and just be proud of the area that we live in."

We've gathered some of the postcards below, however, to see the hundreds more on display it will require a trip to see them in person. The Erewash Museum is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday between 11am and 4pm.
