Report: This week, we had decent attendance, pleasant weather (excepting the overnight frost), evidence that the carp are moving around the lake, and a different payout – overall winner and then three sections winners (high numbers A bank, high numbers B bank, and low numbers both banks). It was interesting to see that the top four individuals filled these four spots.

The sharp frost led to a slow start.  There was very little caught during the first two hours in most areas. Then as the day warmed up, fish began to move and sport improved.

Lee Clark on peg A15 (the same peg he inhabited on his last attendance) made no mistakes.  He caught his first carp on a pellet waggler, then switched to bomb before settling down to catch carp steadily from his margins on pole-fished corn.  He included some large brutes in his final weight of 74-13.

This year, peg B3 has been the peg no one wanted and Pete Stockwin was not overpleased with his draw.  For over two hours he had no signs at all, then, all of a sudden, the fish “switched on” and, casting his bomb (various baits) around the swim he found his rod tip kept pulling around as fish after fish took his baits.  His 49-07 total was second overall and took the “low numbers” section.

Chris Graves (on B21) was fishing his first Nisa Midweek Open, and made an impressive start. Casting a method feeder towards the island (wafter bait) he caught seven decent carp to put 41-08 on the scales for third place overall and to win the B bank section.

Fourth overall was the ever-consistent Chris Wayte who nearly always seems to draw on the top end of the lake.  This week he was on peg B18. Like many, he had a slow start to the match before getting a response on his bomb, but by switching baits managed to winkle out 32-01 which (by default) took the A section.

Fifth-placed Andy Farndon was on peg A6.  He caught his first fish after around two hours near the start of the small island on a bomb, and then had four more carp in the latter stages on the method feeder fished to the corner to total 27-09.

Gary Cook (peg B18) was sixth with an all-bream catch of 21-13 taken on pole and pellet, which was just ahead of Lee Stroud’s 21-06 of three carp from peg A20, and John Adamson’s 19-10 (three carp) from B14.

Dave Alewood (B10) had two carp and a bream for 10-12, LJ Stroud (A11) had an all-roach catch of 8-00.  Although all anglers caught fish, many decided to prioritise a quick “getaway” and did not bother to weigh in.

Many thanks to everyone who assisted with the scales.

REMINDER: Please book a place promptly if you intend to fish these matches.  Attendance will be limited to 18 pegs, “first come, first served”, to ensure everyone has a decent peg.  Last year we had several “sellouts” – so please book on (through the Facebook Page “Nisa – midweek open matches” against the appropriate match notice.

NB. Nisa Opens are held most Wednesdays on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).
