Report: The bitterly cold winter continued, with a -1C temperature on arrival, rising slowly throughout the day to 5C, although the biting South-East wind made it feel colder. The A bank side of the lake had been frozen over on Monday, and although most had melted, it was likely that this had again dropped the water temperature.
Despite that, only one angler failed to catch a fish, and although overall weights were low, interest remained right up to the end as weights were close. The payout was to the overall winner and the winner of the other bank.
Chris Wayte on peg A20 fished the bomb for the whole match, and casting to the island he failed to see any signs with sweet corn bait. After 30 minutes a switch to bread changed his fortunes and he quickly caught three carp, to which he added three more (on bread) before the match ended for a weight of 33-07 and the overall win.
Not pleased to draw peg B13, Phil Hunt was not expecting to catch a great deal and spent two fruitless hours on the bomb. Switching to the pole (at 8m) and baiting with corn, he hooked and lost a carp, before catching several nice bream and one small carp for his 22-00 total for second place and top weight on the B bank. He lost two further carp, which could have cost him the overall win!
The third place was taken by John Adamson (peg A18). On arrival, he was disappointed to find it iced over, but by breaking it all around the margin around the corner to his left, and then spinning it, he managed to clear enough to be able to cast straight out. Although the ice remained (covering the area where one would expect to catch) all day, by fishing with the bomb he managed to catch three carp (two on sweet corn and one on bread) for 21-04 for third place.
Dave Alewood (A15) continued his recent good form to take fourth place with two carp on the bomb for 13-09, Tony Lamb (B18) was fifth with 12-08 of bream, Paul Reynolds (B22) in sixth with a single carp weighing 10-12.
As I write this the temperature is 14C, and with the brisk wind, we can expect the water temperatures to rise throughout the coming week, resulting in the fish moving around more and wishing to feed. Hopefully, the weights will improve by next Wednesday.
Many thanks to Paul Reynolds for assisting with the scales.
NB. Nisa Opens are held most Wednesdays on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).
