Report: The final (and fiftieth) Nisa Midweek Open Match of the year attracted another decent attendance despite the weather and time of year, although, unfortunately, the sport was not as good as anticipated. There was some heavy rain before the draw and after the match ended, but throughout fishing, it remained dry, and there was even the occasional sunny period. However, the near-gale North-West wind gave a wind chill effect well below the actual 12C, making it chilly.
The match was fished over both Lakes Two and Four, with the pay-out to the overall winner and then three (defaulted) section winners, the A and B banks of Lake Two and Lake Four.
Just before the draw commenced Dave Alewood, on behalf of the anglers, presented match organiser John Adamson with a bottle of Whisky, in thanks for running the events all year. John thanked all who contributed, and all those who have fished throughout the year, making the events so successful.
After the previous week’s superb weights, expectations were high and most hoped for a sheltered A-bank draw. This demonstrates how much we all know, as it proved the worst section with 50% not bothering to weigh. Instead, it was the B-bank, facing the wind, that enjoyed the best sport.
Rob Lowe, one of our regulars for some years, drew peg B18, and although a bit disappointed thought he could enjoy a decent day catching bream. Instead, no matter what he tried he struggled to get any reaction from the fish, and after spending two fruitless hours fishing the feeder returned to the pole with just over an hour to go. After a quick try on his previous pole line, he fed his margin swim with groundbait, and baiting with a 6ml expander pellet was surprised when he hooked his first carp. At the end of the match, he had 6 nice carp and a few skimmers for 40-07 to record his first-ever Nisa Open win (and a nice envelope of cash). A very popular winner.
On Lake Four peg 13, (also facing the wind,) Steve Brindley again fished with a feeder, and baiting with maggots caught a single carp, several F1s, skimmers, roach and perch for 34-04 for second overall and won the Lake Four prize. Also on Lake Four on peg 10 was overall fourth-placed Phil Hunt who weighed 22-02, and fifth-placed Paul Reynolds (peg 22) with 21-11.
Back on Lake Two, last week’s winner Peter Stockwin was disappointed to draw peg B14, and although facing the cold wind persevered to the end. In the last 45 minutes, he had four bites on his bomb and bread, put four carp into his keepnet, and his 28-13 weight secured him third-overall place and the default prize for winning bank B.
The poor A bank was won with 16-07 (a carp and a few bream) by Gaz Kitch, who sat on peg A20.
Many thanks to Rob Lowe for his efficient scales work.
There will be no match next week, with the next (on Lakes Two & Four) scheduled for Wednesday 1st January 2025. Please note that the Café will be closed that day. The draw will be held in the car park outside the Café.
Wishing everyone an excellent Christmas, and thanks for supporting the matches this year.
NB. Nisa Opens are held most Wednesdays on Lake Two at Makins Fishery (see Facebook "Nisa - midweek open matches" to book a place).
