Woman arrested after man dies in Ilkeston

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a man died in Ilkeston.

Police officers received reports that a man had been seriously assaulted at an address in Stamford Street in the town at 4.45pm on Tuesday 19th December.  A number of local roads were closed as a result and members of the public were asked to avoid the area.

A man in his 40s was later found with serious injuries, however, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.. 

A woman in her 40s has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is currently in police custody.

Officers remain at the scene, and, whilst the murder investigation is at its early stages, a statement from Derbyshire Police said that the incident appeared to be isolated and domestic within the premises which were attended.

Speaking to Erewash Sound, Chief Inspector Chris Thornhill said: "There is an ongoing investigation which is a murder investigation, and what I can say at the moment is that we do have a person under arrest in connection with that matter. Obviously, because it is an investigation and as it is early days, there is very little I can say more than that at the moment, other than to reassure, regarding updates around the investigation, is that we will be making media releases in due course."

In the wake of what is now two separate incidents in the last week, CI Thornhill added: "I entirely understand that it has been a difficult week for the people of Ilkeston, also for the Police and the families of people involved.  There was an incident a few days ago where another person sadly lost their life in Ilkeston and not too far from where this investigation is, but what I can say is, just to reassure, the two matters are entirely unconnected and someone was arrested and charged with that matter.  Because of the circumstances, I can't go into any more detail, but we don't anticipate that there is any risk to the wider public from either of those two incidents."

"We are coming into the Christmas period and because of the incidents, there will be more Police officers in Ilkeston where we have arranged for extra patrols to provide reassurance to people who will see Police officers and PCSOs out and about - perhaps a bit more than normal, although we are obviously in town,  so if people have concerned, they should feel free to approach and have a conversation with them".
