Actor Vicky McClure was amongst 1,200 people walking to honour loved ones with dementia at Alzheimer’s Society’s Nottingham Memory Walk which was held on 10th September.

The walk around Wollaton Park started with a moment of remembrance to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s death. The park’s picturesque lake was visited by The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh in 1955 for the Royal Show.

Money raised will go towards Alzheimer’s Society’s vital services, including its Dementia Connect support line which has been a lifeline to so many.

Vicky, joined by members of Our Dementia Choir, walked Nottingham Memory Walk for the 12th time.

She said: “What an amazing turnout at Alzheimer’s Society’s Nottingham Memory Walk today. You’re all doing incredible things for family members and friends with dementia. I’m walking for my late Nana Iris, as I always do. I’m also walking for this lot – the amazing choir – who are teaching me so much about dementia. It’s so tough dealing with the system and everything that comes with it, but I think we’re getting somewhere.

“Memory walk holds a special place in my heart. It’s so inspiring to walk alongside people from all ages and backgrounds striving to stop dementia in its tracks. I’ve seen firsthand the challenges families go through when their loved one has dementia, but there is help out there. This is why events like Memory Walk are crucial to help charities like Alzheimer’s Society continue supporting as many people as possible.”

Every three minutes someone develops dementia and it is estimated that, by 2040, 1.6 million people will have the condition.

Kate Lee, Alzheimer’s Society Chief Executive, said: “It was extremely moving to see so many people come together to honour or remember their loved ones. Every step taken will help us provide a lifeline of support for as many people affected by dementia as possible.

“Too many people face dementia alone. With the help of our brilliant fundraisers, we can ensure that everyone affected by dementia can turn to us for expert support through practical advice, emotional support, and guidance for the best next step.

“I would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make this year’s Memory Walk such a brilliant success.”
