Step into spring with Erewash Walking Week (8th-14th April)

Residents from across Erewash are being encouraged to become explorers this spring – as part of a council-backed fitness challenge to get them out and about.

The aim is to encourage people to take strolls around areas of the borough while checking out beauty spots such as the legendary Hermit’s Cave.

Organised by the borough council’s Community Health and Wellbeing Team, all the walks are led by experienced guides and are suitable for people of all ages.

A total of 18 gentle treks have been lined up from Monday 8th April until Sunday 14th April during what is being billed as Erewash Walking Week. They range from as little as half a mile to rambles of up to five miles – and include the Hermits Walk in Dale Abbey on Saturday 13 April.

Those taking part will be guided into a wood where in 1130 AD a God-fearing baker from Derby was inspired by a religious vision to carve out a cave where he dwelt for 20 years.

Other strolls will take residents along old railway routes and waterways. One ramble in Shipley Park is specifically for carers.

The activities are part of the county-wide Walk Derbyshire initiative, which is a mission to get people taking daily strolls to improve their physical and mental health.

In a message to residents, Erewash Borough Council’s team said: “Whether you are interested in learning about local history, exploring nature, socialising with friends, or simply challenging yourself, walking can contribute to boosting your immunity and reduces the risk of long-term health conditions.”

All the walks are free – but some need to be booked in advance. For more information click on: Walking Week (erewash.gov.uk)
