Shaping the future: In conversation with Erewash MP Adam Thompson on policy, community and change

MP Adam Thompson in Westminster Hall debate on financial sustainability in higher education

Speaking with Paul Stacey on the Erewash Sound Breakfast Show, Member of Parliament for Erewash, Adam Thompson, recalled his first speech in a debate in Parliament recently which involved business rates.

He claimed, "I was a bit afraid because I was like, oh, anyone can intervene".

Yesterday was his first experience in leading a debate at Westminster Hall, Parliament’s second debate chamber. The toughest challenge faced for his tabled debate on financial sustainability in higher education, was gathering people for his debate, as most people travel back to their constituencies on a Thursday.

The former University of Nottingham lecturer relishes having been thrown in at the deep end, with a busy diary filled with multiple engagements and visiting local businesses.

Adam Thompson will officially take on a new role as the chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Furniture Industry Group. There are many furniture companies in Long Eaton in particular, which is seen as a beneficial connection for the MP.

In a recent engagement, Mr Thompson was seen at Trent College with the Wildflower Community Choir, a group based in Long Eaton which focuses on mental health as well as community spirit. He commented that "they were just fantastic and were doing an amazing job".

A meeting was also held with East Midlands Railway and Network Rail, discussing both national and local matters.  Changes in the foreseeable future for Ilkeston and Long Eaton stations are a must for the MP. In Ilkeston, he announced they will be installing Wi-Fi, and at Long Eaton there are discussions to improve disabled access.

Adam Thompson is also campaigning for improvements in provision for special educational needs and disabilities, following a number of requests for support from local people.  Mr Thompson and his fellow MPs around Derbyshire are raising the issues to work towards improvements within the county.  During the interview, the Erewash MP claims "there are some pretty big failures that could be improved upon".
