A group of people will be setting off from Ilkeston to walk to Leicester over the early May Bank Holiday weekend, covering a distance of 30+ miles to raise money to fund a sensory garden and to raise awareness for Men's Mental Health.
Michael Bull took his own life in 2023 after a battle with poor mental health so the garden within the grounds of Scargill Primary School will be created in his memory.
His school friends and family nicknamed him 'The Bee's Knees', and the aim on 5th May, is to walk from Hogarth's in Ilkeston to a pub called 'The Bee's Knees' in Leicester. The hope is that the money will enable Michael's two children Florence and Roman to always have a place to feel close to and to connect with their father, who the group say was a great man they were sadly robbed of truly knowing.
Once enough money has been raised to complete the sensory garden, which will include a resin flooring with a bumblebee in the middle, any excess money will be donated to men’s mental health charities, such as Mind, with the aim to make a change and save other fathers, sons, brothers and friends in the future. Risley-based Treetops Hospice will also benefit from any excess funding to help them continue work in supporting the families and friends of those affected.
