School Appeals Panel members wanted

Derbyshire County Council is looking for people to sit on school appeals panels.

Panels are held when a parent or carer appeals the decision to refuse their child a place at their preferred school. The appeals are heard by an independent panel of three people, and the council is looking for more appeals members.

The appeals are held online during the working week throughout the year. Dates are set in advance and appeal panel members can choose how often they take part.

No specific experience or formal qualifications are required to apply as appropriate training will be provided.

Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Education, Councillor Alex Dale, said: “If you, or someone you know, would like the opportunity to make a real difference to the lives on children and young people in Derbyshire, then we’d like to hear from you.

“Most of the appeals are held online but occasionally you may be invited into a face to face hearing.

“Other than attending the appeals, you’d need to read the case papers in advance so that you can actively participate in the hearing and decide to uphold or dismiss the appeal. You will be supported throughout the process by the Clerk to the panel.

“We’re looking for people from all walks of life with different experiences and we’ll provide training to help you with the role.”

Unfortunately, due to the regulations that have to be followed, employees of the county council, school or academy trust cannot become panel members.

Panel members are eligible for an allowance of £25 per day. For more information see the council’s website or email alisha.parker @ derbyshire.gov.uk.
