At Christmas, the pressure of buying presents and preparing special meals can weigh heavily on many families. To ensure everyone has access to nutritious food this festive season, Rural Action Derbyshire (RAD) has launched an innovative Food Support Map.
As part of RAD’s flagship food project, Feeding Derbyshire, the brand-new online tool will help individuals and families across Derbyshire easily locate food banks and community pantries in their area. This vital resource arrives at a critical time, as more people face food insecurity during the festive period and the colder months ahead.
The interactive map, now live on RAD’s website, provides a simple, user-friendly way to find up-to-date information on nearby food banks and pantries, including their opening hours, locations, and available services.
Charlotte Winterbottom, Policy & Partnerships Manager at RAD, who has led the development of the Food Support Map, said: "We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to all the food projects for keeping their details up to date and working with us to ensure we can share this important information with the public. This map will be a lifeline for many, helping us connect people with the support they need during challenging times.
“If anyone needs to use one of the food support projects we encourage them to contact their local food project directly to check their opening times as they may be different over the Christmas holidays."
Food banks provide emergency food parcels for people in crisis, while community pantries offer a more sustainable option, operating like low-cost shops for the local community. Pantries typically provide a range of affordable food, toiletries, and household essentials, for a small membership fee or at reduced prices.
Whether you’re looking for support or exploring ways to help local food projects, the Food Support Map is a valuable tool for all.
