Mothers’ Union in Derbyshire and DALEDIVA are working together to help raise awareness of domestic abuse and also to help support local refuges.
For nearly 150 years, Mothers’ Union has worked with communities in the UK and around the world to end violence, end poverty and end injustice.
In September of 2023 at York Minster and with the support of Archbishop Stephen Cotterill, Mothers’ Union launched its new campaign, RISE UP! Against Domestic Abuse.
National Programme Manager for Mothers’ Union, Emily Brailsford said: “It is so important that we fight against the injustice of domestic abuse which can affect absolutely anyone, irrespective of their background. We hope that the RISE UP! campaign will raise awareness of domestic abuse, how it often goes hidden and how we can fight it, locally and nationally.”
Mothers’ Union has collaborated with DALEDIVA, an award winning choir based in Matlock, to arrange and sing, a 3-part vocal arrangement of ‘I Am Not Nothing’ by American Singer/Songwriter Beth Crowley, to use as their anthem for the RISE UP! campaign.
Ally Law, director of DALEDIVA, was overjoyed to be asked to take part in the RISE UP! campaign. “This problem is something that is close to our hearts and we feel honoured to sing this song and help to raise awareness of domestic abuse and hopefully do our part in making a change for victims everywhere.”
DALEDIVA and Mothers’ Union members have been putting up RISE UP helpline posters and have donated hundreds of toiletry items to local refuge organisation The Elm Foundation.
Helen Mitchell, Head of Operations at The Elm Foundation said: “The very kind and generous donations from the Mothers Union and members of DALEDIVA will make a real difference to our clients. Often women and their children arrive at our refuges with very few personal possessions, and to ensure that a warm welcome is given, with all immediate essentials provided is so important.”
