Erewash MP Maggie Throup OBE has welcomed the announcement that Derbyshire County Council and Erewash Borough Council will see their budgets boosted by 8.3 per cent and 5.7 per cent in 2024-25.
The Local Government Finance Settlement sets out how much councils have available to spend on vital local services each year, including social care which will see a £1.5 billion increase in funding next year as a result of the announcement. Local authorities in England, including Derbyshire County Council and Erewash Borough Council, will receive a share of the £64.7 billion Local Government Finance Settlement next year – up £4.5 billion on this last year.
Maggie said: “I fully recognise the important role that Local Authorities such as Derbyshire County Council and Erewash Borough Council play in delivering essential public services and building stronger communities across our area.
“I recently met with Simon Hoare MP, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities where I urged his Department to increase support to Derbyshire County Council and Erewash Borough Council at the next Local Government Financial Settlement.
“I am delighted that the Government Minister has listened to my concerns and announced that the County Council and the Borough Council will receive an additional £54.9 million and £700,000.00 in funding in 2024-25. These additional funds will help our local leaders take long-term decisions to deliver a brighter future for our area.
“This builds on the significant funding boost the councils received last year, showing the Government’s plan to ensure local authorities have the resources they need is working. Meanwhile, Labour have no plan and would just take us back to square one.”
A statement said that residents will also remain protected from excessive council tax increases due to council tax reforms which ensure that councils cannot impose sudden and unexpected rises in council tax on local people without a referendum. This additional funding comes on top of the £25 million Towns Fund Deal and £2.8 million Shared Prosperity Fund that Erewash has received, which are improving local and civic infrastructure and supporting local communities.
