Liberal Democrat members from within the constituency of Mid Derbyshire selected Barry Holliday to fight the general election campaign back in June 2023.
Barry commented at the time: "It's a great honour and privilege to be selected by local members to be their candidate and voice in the next General Election. Mid Derbyshire deserves better than the disastrous Conservatives, comments such as encouraging people to ‘stop being sentimental over child refugees’ show their party truly are the ‘nasty party’.
“Derbyshire is rejecting the ‘same old, same old’ from Labour and the Conservatives. Residents across our county are turning to the Liberal Democrats in local government. The Lib Dems are making progress and gains in most local authorities in Derbyshire.”
“If you are sick of seeing MPs breaking the rules and getting away with it, sick of a Westminster bubble not listening to normal people, sick of a system that seems to focus on self-interest and not seeing the best in people, then lend me your support and join me in voting Liberal Democrat in this general election.”
Barry added: “The Lib Dems have research showing that the Conservative government’s boasts over inflation reaching 2.3% “ring hollow” in the face of such startling increases in mortgage payments which have been “pushing families to the brink”. Numbers from the ONS say 15.3% of households in Amber Valley re-mortgaged in the last year, 13.5% in Derby and 16% in Erewash, meaning approx.. 30,927 families faced an additional cost on average of £128 per month across these 3 local authorities.”
The Liberal Democrats are on the up after beating the Conservatives at the May local elections and winning four stunning parliamentary by-election victories since the last General Election.
Barry also said: “Labour offer nothing to the residents of Mid Derbyshire, they wrote the constituency off in December 2023 announcing it as a ‘non-battleground’ seat, basically saying they don’t believe they can beat the Conservatives here and so won’t be trying as hard as in their target seats.”
“If you want change, if your family and friends need change, if your neighbours and local businesses are desperate for change then I will be that change for you. If you want to see an end to the Conservatives taking Mid Derbyshire for granted as they have done for the last 14 years, then I am your only logical anti-Tory candidate.”
Barry concluded: “Local health services have been brought to their knees, people’s mortgages and rent have skyrocketed and water companies have been allowed to pump their filthy sewage into our rivers including here in Derbyshire. All this by a Conservative government more interested in fighting between themselves than standing up for the country. Every vote for the Liberal Democrats is a vote for a fair deal. It’s a vote for a party that will stand up for our community and our health services.”
