With a seemingly unstoppable switch for the majority of people to on-line banking, the Erewash borough is once again being included in the raft of closures for a number of firms.
In the wake of Nationwide closing its Borrowash branch in the Summer, HSBC has become the next to announce plans with 114 - over a quarter of its remaining sites - set to be closed including in Long Eaton.
With an ever-reducing demand for over-the-counter services, the company has said that some of its branches included in the closure plans were attracting fewer than 250 people each week.
Nationally, 100 jobs are expected to be lost, with an unknown number employed in the town in the south of the borough when it closes on 11th July 2023. The Ilkeston branch has already closed having been included in a previous round. Regionally, the branch in Ripley will close on 25th July 2023, whilst in Eastwood, the closure will apply on 29th August 2023.
HSBC has said that it will be investing tens of thousands of pounds in updating its 327 branches that will remain after the latest closure process has been fully implemented. A spokesperson said that the decision to close branches was never easy nor was taken lightly, particularly where branches were the last in a particular area. The statement said that its strategy to deal with those affected by the closures included providing free tablet devices to selected people who do not have such equipment to bank on-line and that they will also be providing coaching to help them turn to digital methods.
