Heavy snowfall brings Ilkeston to a standstill with multiple crashes

Manners Road in Ilkeston closed this morning due to the poor conditions

Ilkeston faced severe traffic disruptions on Friday morning due to significant snowfall and icy conditions. Reports confirm that at least three road traffic crashes have occurred across the town, leaving commuters stranded.

Although the snowfall had stopped, the aftermath continued to affect major roads into Friday daytime, with congestion being reported in several areas.

Major roads, including Lord Haddon Road, Little Hallam Hill and Heanor Road had been closed due to accidents, whilst Chalons Way saw blockages for up to an hour. Drivers are advised to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.

While many people found the morning's icy roads and delays overwhelming, with one individual noting, “this morning has raised my anxiety!”, others however recognised the hard work of local bus drivers. One commuter praised the efforts, saying, “Give credit where it’s due. The lovely Trentbarton drivers are doing the best in these bad conditions."

Emergency services have been actively responding to incidents, and are reminding drivers to remain cautious. Even as the skies clear, untreated surfaces and residual ice pose ongoing risks. Motorists are advised to reduce speeds and plan extra time for their journeys. For those planning to travel, checking live updates and weather forecasts is highly recommended.

While weather conditions are expected to remain stable for the rest of Friday, the town is still recovering from the morning chaos.
