Erewash Labour has expressed being 'thrilled' that food stalls will now be permitted to operate year-round on Ilkeston Market Place, a decision, it said reflects the vibrant community spirit and economic growth of the town.

Previously, restrictive rules established in 1985 limited food stalls to market days and the historic Charter Fair, which dates back to the 1250s. This meant that many community events, such as the Classic Car Show, which began in 2012, and the Glow Festival, initiated in 2023, had to relocate food stalls to the less visible Pimlico car park, diminishing the overall experience for attendees.

The change allows local food vendors to enhance the atmosphere during the many large community events that Ilkeston hosts throughout the year, including the popular Ilkeston Classic Car Show and the newly launched Glow Festival.

Councillor Becca Everett, Deputy Leader of Erewash Borough Council, expressed enthusiasm for this development.  She said: "Market places are the beating heart of our town centres. They offer community, history, and retail spaces. Modernising Ilkeston market place to allow food stalls for events is a great step in ensuring that Ilkeston can continue be used as an events area outside of the traditional markets and Charter Fair."

In a statement, Erewash Labour said there was a collective belief that that the initiative will not only invigorate the Market Place but also create a welcoming environment for residents and visitors alike. It added that, "By embracing local entrepreneurship and fostering a bustling marketplace, we are taking significant strides towards a prosperous future for Ilkeston."
