Disposal of tyres and asbestos at Ilkeston HWRC to attract charges from 1st August 2024

Erewash residents seeking to dispose of tyres and asbestos at the Ilkeston Household Waste Recycling Centre or at any of the other eight Derbyshire County Council run sites should expect to pay from Thursday 1st August 2024.

The authority is bringing in a charge of £4 per car or van tyre up to a maximum of four, and £6 per sheet of asbestos up to a maximum of two sheets, but not including trade waste.  Payment will be taken via card only.  Bicycle tyres will not attract a charge for disposal.

The change follows a decision taken in March 2024 by the county council’s Cabinet as part of a series of measures to help make the service more efficient and effective and to help save money.

The county council is not required to accept tyres and asbestos at its recycling centres but does so currently at no charge. Excluding tyres and asbestos from the materials collected could reduce running costs by up to £69,000 a year.

In a 12-week public consultation held from October last year, 90% of respondents said they would prefer a small charge rather than the sites not accepting these materials at all. There were 2,876 responses to the consultation in total.

Councillor Carolyn Renwick, Derbyshire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Infrastructure and Environment, said: “We’re constantly looking for ways to make the services we provide more efficient and effective. Having listened to the views of residents, we believe these changes strike the right balance between continuing to provide a good quality service for residents and making savings.”

Further changes will be introduced at the county council’s recycling centres on 1st October 2024 including reducing opening hours by two hours each day when they are typically less busy. The new opening hours will be 9:30am to 5:00pm each day at all but one site.

Plans are also underway to introduce a trade waste trial in the coming months as well as a permit scheme for residents to use the sites. The date for introducing these two initiatives is yet to be confirmed.

Site users are asked to double bag asbestos before taking it to a recycling centre and visits for this purpose are limited to one visit with no return.
