Streets in Derby will be jet washed, cleared of litter, and outdated signage will be taken down – thanks to the Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter Business Improvement District (BIDs).
Working alongside Derby City Council, the annual clean-up effort is part of the Great British Spring Clean, which runs from 21st March to 6th April.
As part of the national initiative, businesses are being invited to take part in a dedicated day of action on Tuesday, March 25th. Volunteers will help with litter picking, weeding, removing fly-posters, and other general tidying tasks across the Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter.
They will work alongside staff from the BIDs, Derby City Council’s Streetpride team, local councillors, and Public Protection Officers.
Additionally, the Streetpride team will assist by jet washing pavements and cleaning windows of vacant units, further improving the city centre’s appearance and Derby City Council has announced it will be funding some extra planting in the St Peters Quarter area.
Martin Langsdale MBE, BID Chair for the Cathedral Quarter Business Improvement District (BID), is pleased to support the Great British Spring Clean and hopes to see even more local businesses get involved.
He said: “While maintaining the city’s cleanliness is the council’s responsibility, the BIDs are proud to contribute and support this national initiative. It’s great to see so many businesses working together, sharing knowledge, and strengthening our community.
Councillor Ndukwe Onuoha, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for Streetpride, Public Safety and Leisure, added: “It’s fantastic to witness our local businesses and volunteers stepping up to make our city a cleaner and more inviting place. When we collaborate, we can achieve so much more.
“The Council is working hard to maintain a clean city, and with the involvement of businesses and organisations, we can make an even bigger difference. If you haven’t already signed up, now is the time.”
This year’s campaign is also a chance for businesses to learn about the forthcoming changes to recycling regulations. From Monday, March 31st, new simpler recycling rules will require businesses to sort recyclable materials separately from general waste to enhance recycling rates. This initiative aims to standardise collections across England and reduce contamination in recycling bins.
The Great British Spring Clean returns for its tenth year and remains the nation’s largest mass-action environmental campaign, encouraging everyone to pledge to collect at least one bag of litter during the event.
