The chair of trustees for The Friends of Bennerley Viaduct has issued an apology for the delay in opening up a new ramp allowing greater levels of access for all to the local landmark.
The delay to the unofficial opening and the official ceremony came after cracks started appearing near the top of the new earthworks for the installation at the eastern end.
Although settlement cracks are normal for this kind of project, contractors Fox Owmby wanted to be certain that the problem was not caused by slippage, which is a far more serious matter.
Ongoing monitoring of the cracks has shown that movement is slowing down. Once contractors are confident that the ramp is stable and has stopped moving, they will put the final surface on the ramp path and erect the necessary safety fencing.
John Scruton, chair of trustees apologised for the delay. He said: “We are sorry that the opening has been put back, but it will be worth it when the ramp is opened in mid to late September.”
Marlows, the contractors appointed for Phase II of the east end project, will take over the site in September to start work on the visitor centre, car park and landscaping. Access to the new ramp will not be affected.
Phases I and II works are part of the Kimberley Means Business project, in partnership with Broxtowe Borough Council and funded by the UK Government.
