Broomfield Hall Animal Unit to hold Conservation Themed Open Day

The Animal Unit at Derby College Group’s Broomfield Hall will welcome visitors on Sunday 12th May between 11am and 3pm for its Conservation Themed Animal Unit Open Day.

The open day at the Derby College Group site is designed for young people and adults who are potentially interested in joining a study programme at the College and for families looking for a fun and interactive day out along with conservation education.

The Animal Unit at Broomfield Hall in Morley includes a wide range of animals, reptiles, insects and birds, including a number of rare breeds, which are looked after by students at the College.

Activities at the open day will include farm and zoo animal feeding demonstrations, children’s activities and handling demonstrations, an insight into the new wildlife pond and the opportunity for those attending to hear details about how the College is carrying out some outstanding conservation work.

There will also be a children’s craft making station and the plant centre will also be open for buying plants for gardens/home, and all this will be supported by the wonderful animal care students.

Refreshments will be served by local company Amaze Events and charities including RSPB, Guide Dogs for the Blind and Cats Protection will have stalls. 

All the money raised goes towards improving the animal unit and the animals’ welfare and allows the College to continue its expansion of the animal unit. And donations are also welcomed.

No advanced booking is required and the cost to attend is: Adults £3.00 and Children £2.00

Animal Unit coordinator Jonathan Taylor said: “Our open days are incredibly popular and people gain a real insight into how the animals are cared for. Broomfield really is a very special place, and for those interested in studying at Broomfield Hall, they will find that it isn’t a conventional classroom. Students have an opportunity to study surrounded by farm animals, exotic species, rare breeds and wildlife – from donkeys, pigs, meerkats and wallabies to snakes, spiders and porcupines. And no two days are ever the same in our Animal Centre as students gain hands-on experience in caring for, rehabilitating, handling, feeding, housing and training different species”
