Borough Police Officers act after an increase in parking-related issues

Police officers in Erewash have issued a series of reminders after seeing an increase in the amount of parking issues in the borough, particularly around schools and crossings, and have urged motorists to park in safe and legal manner.

A statement posted on social media said that unattended vehicles seen to be causing an obstruction can be removed, and added that Civil Enforcement Officers can issue the owner with a penalty charge notice for stopping in a restricted area, including if a vehicle has been left blocking a driveway or a path, even for a short amount of time.

A stark warning said: "Pavements are for people, help keep pedestrians safe or risk prosecution and your vehicle being towed away!"

Here is a list of do's and dont's to keep you parking safely for everyone:-

DO NOT:-

  • Stop or park near a school entrance. Make sure you keep off school keep clear and zig zag markings.
  • Double park to pick up or drop off children from vehicles.
  • Park in such a position that buses, the emergency services and other commercial vehicles are unable to pass.
  • Block the pavement - allow at least a 'double buggy' width for people to use it safely, including mobility scooters.
  • Park where a bus stop is clearly defined either by road markings or an actual shelter.

DO:-

  • Observe in force parking restrictions that may apply.
  • Consider parking further away from school.
  • Consider local residents and whether they have immediate access onto and off their driveway.
  • Remember that buses are there to provide a public service and inconsiderate parking can lead to unnecessary delays.
  • Consider people who have disabilities - those that use mobility scooters, wheelchair uses, adults with prams - they should not need to step into the road because you've parked selfishly.

Please DO NOT park in a way that causes an obstruction to other road users.
