Just a matter of days after NatWest announced plans to close its Market Place, Long Eaton branch at the end of May 2025, local residents have been confronted with another bank announcing plans to close a branch - also in the Market Place - in the town.
Lloyds Banking Group (LBG) has earmarked a total of 136 branches for closure between May 2025 and March 2026 including the Halifax in Long Eaton which is set to close its doors for the last time on September 18th 2025.
LBG includes the Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland brands in its portfoilo The number of banking industry branches being closed has been on the increase for around 10 years as customer banking habits change with the further embedding of online banking and the use of information technology A total of 61 Lloyds, 61 Halifax and 14 Bank of Scotland sites nationwide are expected to begin closing their doors from May 2025 over a 10-month programme.
The latest move comes just a short while after the company offered its customers the opportunity to use any of the above brands following a restructuring of its processes.
As with NatWest's recent decision to close branches, including in Long Eaton, Lloyds Banking Group has cited changing customer habits as the driving force behind its own closure plans, although it has said that all employees affected by branch closures will be offered jobs elsewhere within the parent company.
A statement said that over 20 million customers are now using company web applications to get access to their money on-demand, and that they have more choice and flexibility than ever before. It also referenced the options to use telephone banking, visit a community banker or use any Halifax, Lloyds or Bank of Scotland branch, giving access to many more branches and could also bank at 11,000 Post Office branches or a Banking Hub.
Regionally for Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, Lloyds Bank branches are set to close as follows:
- Hucknall - March 4th 2026
Halifax branch closures are planned as follows:
- Derby East Street - October 23rd 2025
- Long Eaton - September 18th 2025
The Halifax website states: "When making changes to our branch network, we always look to understand the impact on our customers - including how they continue to access banking services.
"Because of this, we may sometimes have a Community Banker visit the area after the branch closes. Or as part of an independent review a Banking Hub or Deposit Service may be set up in a nearby location.
"We are committed to following the requirements of the Financial Conduct Authority – 'FG 22/6: Branch and ATM closures or conversions."
