Erewash Borough Council has allocated £25,000 to support local warm hubs.
The funding, made possible through what the local Labour Party described as "prudent financial management and balanced budgets", will provide essential warmth and comfort to the borough's most vulnerable residents during the colder months.
A statement said that whilst the authority was taking proactive steps to support those in need, it was disheartened, claiming that Derbyshire County Council has yet to announce any similar initiatives for this year.
It suggested that financial struggles for the County Council had left many residents in limbo, without crucial support needed.
In addition to the funding for warm hubs, the Labour administration at borough Town Halls has collaborated with Adam Thompson, the MP for Erewash, and Derbyshire Citizens Advice to reach out to thousands of pensioners in the community, and detailed that letters had been sent informing them of their potential eligibility for pension credit, with the aim to ensure that those who need support the most are aware of the resources available to them.
A statement said that Erewash Labour remains committed to prioritising the needs of the community and that it will continue to seek innovative solutions to support residents adding: "By balancing the books and focusing on what truly matters, we are able to look out for those who are most vulnerable."
Councillor Becca Everett, Erewash Borough Council Deputy Leader said: “We are proud to be taking decisive action to help our residents during these challenging times. This funding for warm hubs reflects our commitment to ensuring that everyone in Erewash has access to the support they need. It is a stark contrast to Derbyshire County Council, which seems unable to support its residents in their time of need.”
