Further court dates set for 17-year old charged with murder following the death of 18-year old Noah Smedley

A 17-year-old has made two court appearances after being charged with murder following a fatal stabbing in Ilkeston.

Police officers were called to Heanor Road at 8:20pm on Saturday 28th December by East Midlands Ambulance Service to reports of a man collapsed in the road.

18-year old Noah Smedley had suffered a stab wound and died at the scene just before 9:00pm.

On the afternoon of Tuesday 31st December, a 17-year-old boy who had been arrested on suspicion of murder was charged with the murder of Noah along with possession of a bladed article. 

The boy, who cannot be identified for legal reasons as he is under the age of 18, but is from the Ilkeston area, first appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday 1st January where he was remanded into secure accommodation. 

He then appeared in Derby Crown Court on Friday 3rd January, wearing a prison-issue tracksuit. No plea was entered and with no application for bail, he was remanded to a young offenders institution.   He is set to enter a plea at a forthcoming hearing on March 21st.

Reporting restrictions were imposed by the magistrate not to name him until he turns 18 or until removed by the Crown Court judge, however, it is understood that he will have turned 18 by the time of his provisional court trial date on 28th July 2025.  

Four 17-year-old boys that were all arrested on suspicion of murder have been released.

A 16-year-old girl that was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on bail pending further enquiries, and another 16-year-old girl, also arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, has been released with no further action.

A 52-year-old man that was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender has been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Floral tributes have been left at the scene of the incident.  Meanwhile, a fundraising effort is ongoing, organised by the mother of one of Noah's close friends, with the aim of covering the costs of his funeral and easing the pressure on Noah's parents.
