Supporting the Erewash Community’s Voice With Its Volunteer-driven Local Radio Station

Erewash might be a small borough nestled between the cities of Derby and Nottingham, but it is one that can be proud of its talent and successes.

Thanks to quality training and real-world experience, a number of Erewash Sound volunteers have proven their credentials by broadcasting from our studios in Ilkeston before earning roles in the media industry; Lewis Allsopp with the BBC in London, Emma Snow with BBC East Midlands Today and Amelia Salmons, firstly with BBC Radio Derby, then Greatest Hits Radio and The Hits in the West Midlands.

Erewash Sound has a track record for nurturing success, with more than 30 people so-far having left us for roles in the media industry. We’re proud but not surprised; you can get training elsewhere, but what we can offer is a real 24-hour FM radio station to get real experience.

In March 2024, we marked fourteen years of broadcasting to Erewash, with our volunteer presenters talking to local people every single day about what matters to them, giving a voice to local people, sharing their stories and playing a soundtrack of music they love. Aged from 15 to 72, our volunteer team of presenters and producers range from school age to retirees, but all sharing a love of radio and the towns and villages we serve.

Our organisation is a not-for-profit community interest company, with over 40 regular volunteers, supported by two part-time employed roles to coordinate and develop the radio station’s activities.

In the next year, we aspire to develop our offer to the community through the creation of a newsroom, supported by a trained journalist to help local residents report and tell the stories happening on their doorstep.

Through our accreditation with NCFE, this would also help inspire new talent with a recognised qualification in journalism.

In order to continue and develop our place in the heart of Erewash society, we are inviting organisations prominent in the community to become a corporate sponsor of our organisation.  We are aiming to raise £20,000 each year through corporate donations and would recognise your contribution by proudly showing your support at our studios and in our promotional materials.
